Prima Materia explores a dance between the ancient and modern, myth and science, technological and organic clashes, and the tipping point of a future under the influence of artificial intelligence.
“In alchemy and philosophy, prima materia, materia prima or first matter, is the ubiquitous starting material required for the alchemical magnum opus and the creation of the philosopher's stone. It is the primitive formless base of all matter similar to chaos, the quintessence or aether.”
Perpetual Drift, 2014
Live Performance, Everson Museum of Art
Live performance documentation
“Perpetual Drift” takes place in the not too distant future. The earth has undergone drastic climate changes and a crew aboard
a lost ship at sea struggles to adapt to an uncertain future and the psychological and emotional trauma created by a series of tragic events. The crew of the ship are the Captain, Ether (a time trav- eler), the robot (a depressed poet and ships navigator), Echo (the mythical nymph), the Specialist, a scientist who specializes in rare botanicals, and lastly the ship itself. The story embodies environ- mental concerns we face as a collective human family, and the death of old structures giving way to new life forms, systems, and organizations
2021 Mass Cultural Council Artist Fellowship Award winner, Dramatic Writing category.
Ether and the Voice: an Electronic Media Opera 2010
Live performance documentation
Ether and the Voice: an electronic media opera is an exploration of female voice, technology and identity. Keough creates a world of symbolic and linguistic fantasy, exploring the disembodied voice, electronic environment, and the archetypal and psychological structures of the interior.
The work investigates older technologies as media devices which initially dislocated the voice from the body such as the telephone and the phonograph, and parallels that phenomena with the splintering and hybridization of virtual identity, digital communication, and language thus expressing a profile of the posthuman.
